kidney A condition whereby an individual's kidneys are no longer able to perform normal excretory activity. Sometimes x-ray contrast dye may contribute to or cause renal failure following a catheterization procedure. Dialysis may be necessary if kidney failure is profound. Renal failure may be temporary (as is usually the case with x-ray dye-related kidney failure) or permanent (as is sometimes seen with dye-related renal failure or cholesterol embolism).
