A functional gastrointestinal disorder which waxes and waned in its severity. IBS is associated with abnormal neural control of the GI tract. A wide variety of complaints may occur involving diarrhea, constipation, nausea, bloating and flatulence as well as dyspeptic symptoms. In the past, this has been termed spastic colitis or mucous colitis.
