carpal tunnel syndrome Sometimes abbreviated CTS. This condition is due to median nerve entrapment under the transverse carpal ligament (flexor retinaculum) of the wrist. Predisposing conditions may include repetitive hand activity, arthritis, diabetes, hypothyroidism, wrist fracture or dislocation, pregnancy, carpal tunnel masses or inherited conditions. Clinical symptoms include arm pain as well as numbness of the first three and one-half digits, which may be aggravated by sleep, driving, or sewing.
