sulfolobaceae A family of sulfolobales consisting of aerobic or facultatively anaerobic chemolithotrophic cocci, usually occurring singly. They grow best at a pH of about 2.
(12 Dec 1998)
sulfolobales An order of crenarchaeota consisting of aerobic or facultatively aerobic, chemolithotrophic cocci which are extreme thermoacidophiles. They lack peptidoglycan in their cell walls.
(12 Dec 1998)
sulfolobus A genus of aerobic, chemolithotrophic, coccoid archaea whose organisms are thermoacidophilic. Its cells are highly irregular in shape, often lobed, but occasionally spherical. It has worldwide distribution with organisms isolated from hot acidic soils and water. Sulfur is used as an energy source.
(12 Dec 1998)
sulfolobus acidocaldarius A species of aerobic, chemolithotrophic archaea consisting of coccoid cells that utilise sulfur as an energy source. The optimum temperature for growth is 70-75 degrees c. They are isolated from acidic fields.
(12 Dec 1998)
Sulfolobus solfataricus beta-glycosidase <enzyme> Has broad specificity against beta(1-4), beta(1-3), and beta(1-6)-o-glucosides and hydrolyzes oligosaccharides from the non-reducing end; amino acid sequence given in first source;swiss-prot p22498
Registry number: EC 3.2.1.-
Synonym: ssbeta-gly, beta-glycosidase, sulfolobus

sulfomucin A mucin containing sulfuric esters in its mucopolysaccharides or glycoproteins.
(05 Mar 2000)
sulfomyxin sodium A mixture of sulfomethylated polymyxin B and sodium bisulfite; an antibacterial agent.
(05 Mar 2000)
sulfonamides Sulfa-related group of antibiotics. The wonder drugs before penicillin and other antibiotics. Sulfonamides are still commonly used today for a variety of infections including, for example, urinary infections.
(12 Dec 1998)

sulfone oxidase <enzyme> From E coli mutants; oxidises both heterocyclic and aliphatic sulfones
Registry number: EC 1.8.-
Synonym: sulfoxide oxidase
(26 Jun 1999)
sulfonic acid Any of the compounds in which a hydrogen atom of a CH group is replaced by the sulfonic acid group, -SO3H; general formula: R-SO3H.
Synonym: sulfoacid.
(05 Mar 2000)
sulfonic acids Inorganic or organic oxy acids of sulfur which contain the rso2(oh) radical.
(12 Dec 1998)
sulfonium compounds Sulfur compounds in which the sulfur atom is attached to three organic radicals and an electronegative element or radical.
