somatotypes A particular category of body build, determined on the basis of certain physical characteristics. The three basic body types are ectomorph (thin physique), endomorph (rounded physique), and mesomorph (athletic physique). The typology was devised by the american psychologist william herbert sheldon (1899-1977). Somatotypes have been related to personality in early studies.
