The ratio of the level of the information-bearing signal power to the level of the noise power. For MODIS, the ratio between (1) typical cloud free scene brightness with solar zenith angle Z=70 deg, and (2) all sensor and processing noise contributions. S/N specifications for various scenes (eg, land, clouds, oceans, ice) are only applicable in the filter bands associated with those scenes. Source: EPO.

The signal-to-noise ratio or S/N is the ratio of the desired signal power over the power of the noise that is present. A higher S/N is desirable in audio applications for more noise immunity; a circuit with a low S/N is more susceptible to noise.
