scleroderma or 'systemic sclerosis'. Scleroderma means 'hard skin'. However many people with this condition have problems in other parts of their bodies as well, hence the second explanatory name, 'systemic sclerosis'. Scleroderma is an uncommon, chronic (persistent) disease affecting the 'connective tissues' which surround the joints, blood vessels and sometimes internal organs beneath the affected areas of skin.
