The identification and quantification of the risk resulting from a specific use or occurrence of a chemical, taking into account the possible harmful effects on individual people or society of using the chemical in the amount and manner proposed and all the possible routes of exposure. Quantification ideally requires the establishment of dose-effect and dose-response relationships in likely target individuals and populations.

| risk assessment |
A determination of the risks to human health and the environment posed by contamination at a site. Risks are calculated using exposure factors, which provide numerical values for "exposures", such as ingestion of arsenic or inhalation of benzene. Risk Assessments may be conducted before or after site cleanup occurs; may look at risks to people, plants or animals; and may calculate risk as a specific value (point estimate) or a range of values (distribution).
