Excessive nonpurulent fluid in the pleural space can result in permanent fibrotic thickening. The sources of fluid vary; infection, neoplasm, and trauma are all possible causes. The extent of embarrassment varies with the amount of fluid, and the degree of fibrosis varies with the chronicity of condition. The findings vary with severity and also with the position of the patient. Fluid is mobile; it will gravitate to the most dependent position. In the affected areas the sounds are muted.
