Black pigment stones are usually found in the gallbladder and are composed of calcium bilirubinate or pigment polymers, with or without calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and mucin; they are hard and often have spicules on the surface. Brown pigment stones are usually found in the common bile duct, are not as hard as black ones, and are composed of calcium bilirubinate and calcium salts of fatty acids, as well as more cholesterol than is found in the black type.
