The amount on which all monthly Social Security cash benefits are based. A worker=s PIA is derived from his average indexed monthly earnings under Social Security. A worker=s disability benefit or old-age benefit at normal retirement age (currently 65) is equal to 100 percent of his PIA. Eligible dependents and survivors get benefits equal to various percentages of the worker=s PIA.
