of a planet occurs when the planet is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun. In other words, they line up in the following order: Sun, Earth, Planet. At opposition, the planet appears high in the sky in the middle of the night. Only the planets farther from the sun than the earth can have an opposition; Mercury and Venus cannot.
