luteinization
the process by which a postovulatory ovarian follicle transforms into a corpus luteum through vascularization, follicular cell hypertrophy, and lipid accumulation, the latter in some species giving the yellow color indicated by the term. Click here to view image■Luteinization, beginning after rupture of the ovarian follicle in ovulation (A) and progressing through vascularization and hypertrophy of the maturing corpus luteum (B, C); it is followed by regression (D) to the corpus albicans (E).

luteinizing h.
a glycoprotein gonadotropin (28,000 daltons) of the adenohypophysis that acts with follicle-stimulating hormone to promote ovulation as well as secretion of androgens and progesterone. It instigates and maintains the second (secretory) portion of the mammalian estrus and menstrual cycle. In females it is concerned with corpus luteum formation and in males it stimulates the development and functional activity of testicular Leydig cells. Called also interstitial cellstimulating h. and lutropin.

luteinizing h.releasing hormone
1. a decapeptide hormone elaborated by the median eminence of the hypothalamus that binds to specific receptor sites on gonadotrophs of the adenohypophysis and stimulates the release of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. High levels continuously maintained desensitize gonadotrophs and terminate gonadotropin release. Long-acting analogs are used to inhibit gonadal steroid secretion in individuals with prostate cancer and some other hormone-responsive cancers. Called also follicle-stimulating hormonereleasing h., gonadotropin-releasing h., gonadoliberin, and luliberin. 2. a preparation of the acetate and hydrochloride salts of this hormone obtained from the brains of certain food animals, used in the differential diagnosis of hypothalamic, pituitary, and gonadal dysfunction and sometimes in treatment of types of male or female infertility or hypogonadism.
