pedunculus cerebellaris inferior Large paired bundles of nerve fibres which develop on the dorsolateral surfaces of the upper medulla, extend under the lateral recesses of the rhomboid fossa and curve dorsally into the cerebellum medial to the middle cerebellar peduncle; composed of a larger (lateral) bundle, the restiform body, and a small (medial) bundle, the juxtarestiform body. Fibres forming this composite bundle originate from spinal neurons and medullary relay nuclei. The largest constituent (restiform body) is crossed fibres from the inferior olive; it also contains the dorsal spinocerebellar tract and cerebellar projections from the lateral reticular nucleus, the accessory cuneate nucleus, the paramedian reticular nuclei and the perihypoglossal nuclei. Vestibulocerebellar fibres are placed medially in the inferior cerebellar peduncle and are usually separately identified as the juxtarestiform body.
Synonym: pedunculus cerebellaris inferior.
(05 Mar 2000)
pedunculus thalami inferior A large fibre bundle emerging from the anterior part of the thalamus in the ventral direction, in part joining the medial fibres of the internal capsule, in other part curving laterally around the medial margin of the capsule into the innominate substance. Many of its fibres establish a reciprocal connection of the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus with the orbital gyri of the frontal lobe, but numerous other fibres constitute a conduction system from the amygdala and olfactory cortex to the mediodorsal nucleus.
See: ansa peduncularis.
Synonym: pedunculus thalami inferior.
(05 Mar 2000)
mesenteric artery, inferior The artery supplying nearly all the left half of the transverse colon, the whole of the descending colon, the sigmoid colon, and the greater part of the rectum. It is smaller than the superior mesenteric artery (mesenteric artery, superior) and arises from the aorta above its bifurcation into the common iliac arteries.
(12 Dec 1998)
right inferior pulmonary vein <anatomy, vein> The vein returning oxygenated blood from the inferior lobe of the right lung to the left atrium.
Synonym: vena pulmonalis inferior dextra.
(05 Mar 2000)
groove for inferior petrosal sinus A groove lodging the inferior petrosal sinus, formed by union of similarly named grooves in the petrous part of the temporal bone and the basilar part of the occipital bone.
Synonym: sulcus sinus petrosi inferioris, inferior petrosal groove, inferior petrosal sulcus.
(05 Mar 2000)
groove for inferior venae cava A groove on the posterior surface of the liver between the caudate lobe and the right lobe which gives passage to the inferior vena cava.
Synonym: sulcus venae cavae, fossa venae cavae, sulcus for vena cava.
(05 Mar 2000)
gyrus frontalis inferior A broad convolution on the convexity of the frontal lobe of the cerebrum between the inferior frontal sulcus and the sylvian fissure; divided by branches of the sylvian fissure into three parts: pars (opercularis) basilaris, triangular part, and orbital part; the first two constitute a portion of the frontal operculum.
Synonym: gyrus frontalis inferior, inferior frontal convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
pharyngeal branch of inferior thyroid artery <anatomy, artery> Distributed to laryngopharynx.
Synonym: rami pharyngeales arteriae thyroideae inferioris.
(05 Mar 2000)
gyrus temporalis inferior A sagittal convolution on the inferolateral border of the temporal lobe of the cerebrum, separated from the middle temporal gyrus by the inferior temporal sulcus. On the inferior surface of the temporal lobe it is separated from the medial occipitotemporal gyrus by the occipitotemporal sulcus. It includes the lateral occipitotemporal gyrus.
Synonym: gyrus temporalis inferior, inferior temporal convolution, third temporal convolution.
(05 Mar 2000)
colliculus inferior The ovoid, paired, inferior eminence of the laminae of mesencephalic tectum; it receives the lateral lemniscus and projects by way of the brachium of inferior colliculus to the medial geniculate body of the thalamus, and is thus an essential way-station in the central auditory pathway.
Synonym: colliculus inferior, corpus quadrigeminum posterius, inferior nasal colliculus, posterior quadrigeminal body.
(05 Mar 2000)
commissure of inferior colliculi Nerve fibres on the midline between the two inferior colliculi connecting the colliculi and containing some fibres originating from nontectal nuclei.
(05 Mar 2000)
concha nasalis inferior A thin, spongy, bony plate with curved margins, on the lateral wall of the nasal cavity, separating the middle from the inferior meatus; it articulates with the ethmoid, lacrimal, maxilla, and palate bones, the above bony plate and its thick mucoperiosteum containing an extensive cavernous vascular bed for heat exchange.
Synonym: concha nasalis inferior, inferior turbinated bone, turbinated body.
(05 Mar 2000)
plexus dentalis inferior Formed by branches of the inferior alveolar nerve interlacing before they supply the teeth; it gives off interior dental branches to the teeth and inferior gingival branches to the gums.
Synonym: plexus dentalis inferior.
(05 Mar 2000)
plexus hypogastricus inferior One of the bilateral autonomic plexus in the pelvis distributed to the pelvic viscera; it receives the hypogastric nerves and the pelvic splanchnic nerves.
Synonym: plexus hypogastricus inferior, plexus pelvinus, pelvic plexus.
(05 Mar 2000)
plexus mesentericus inferior An autonomic plexus, derived from the abdominal aortic plexus, surrounding the inferior mesenteric artery and sending branches to the descending colon, sigmoid, and rectum.
Synonym: plexus mesentericus inferior.
