South Asia , pre-modern regimes developed regional economies before 1800. A modern development regime emerged under British rule after 1800. National regimes took over development after 1945. Since 1970, the leadership capacities of national regimes have declined as international trends have favored global investors and struggles to represent the poor and previously marginal peoples have favored local movements and non-governmental organizations.
