chromosome
One of the threadlike "packages" of genes and other DNA in the nucleus of a cell. Different kinds of organisms have different numbers of chromosomes. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, 46 in all: 44 autosomes and two sex chromosomes. Each parent contributes one chromosome to each pair, so children get half of their chromosomes from their mothers and half from their fathers.

chromosome n.
the number of chromosomes present in the somatic cells of an organism; the normal individual receives, at conception, one set of chromosomes (the haploid number, symbol n) from each of the gametes forming the zygote, thus acquiring the diploid number (2n). In humans, n equals 23.

chromosome a.
an irregularity in the number or structure of chromosomes that may alter the course of development of the embryo, usually in the form of a gain (duplication), loss (deletion), exchange (translocation), or alteration in sequence (inversion) of genetic material. See Plate 1 and see genetic disease, under disease. Click here to view imagePLATE 1—CHROMOSOME ABERRATIONS■Genes are indicated by letters; breaks are indicated by small arrows.
