| air sac |
In contrast to mammals, most birds have air sacs that connect to the lungs. They have one interclavicular and one clavicular air sac, and pairs of the cranial, thoracic, and abdominal air sacs. This also means they get a disease that you will never get, ie, saculitis. During surgical sexing the caudal air sac must be punctured in order to see the gonads. The bird can breathe through these air sacs and this is often used to advantage by veterinarians when they must do surgery on the throat area.
