macrolide <pharmacology> A group of antibiotics produced by various strains of Streptomyces that have a complex macrocyclic structure.
They inhibit protein synthesis by blocking the 50S ribosomal subunit. Include erythromycin, carbomycin. Used clinically as broad spectrum antibiotics, particularly against gram-positive bacteria.

Registry number: EC 2.4.1.-
Synonym: macrolide glucosyltransferase
