| Jolly bodies | Spherical or ovoid eccentrically located granules, approximately 1 um in diameter, occasionally observed in the stroma of circulating erythrocytes, especially in stained preparations (as compared with wet unstained films); probably represent nuclear remnants, inasmuch as they can be stained with dyes that are rather specific for chromatin; the significance of the body's is not exactly known; they occur most frequently after splenectomy or in megaloblastic or severe haemolytic anaemia. | ketone bodies | The substances beta-hydroxybutyric acid, acetoacetic acid, and acetone, which are produced by fatty acid and carbohydrate metabolism in the liver in approximately a 78:20:2 ratio. Acetoacetate is produced from acetyl-CoA. most is enzymatically converted to beta-ketobutyrate, but a small amount is spontaneously decarboxylated to acetone. The ketone bodies can be used as fuels by muscle and brain tissue. In starvation and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, large quantities are produced, causing metabolic acidosis and elevated blood and urine levels of all three ketone bodies. (12 Dec 1998) |

| leishman-donovan bodies | Small spheres found in the spleen and liver of patients with visceral leishmaniasis. The spheres are an alternate, non flagellated form of the parasitic protozoan Leishmania donovani which occurs once the parasite has invaded the cells of the reticuloendothelial system in the patients organs. | fuchsin bodies | Small, discrete, variably sized, spherical, intracytoplasmic, acidophilic, hyaline body's that stain deeply with fuchsin; they occur frequently in plasma cells in chronic inflammation, where they are believed to consist of gamma-globulin. Synonym: fuchsin bodies. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lewy bodies | Intracytoplasmic, eosinophilic, round to elongated inclusions found in vacuoles of injured or fragmented neurons. The presence of lewy bodies is the histological marker of the degenerative changes in parkinson disease but they may be seen in other neurological conditions. They are typically found in the substantia nigra and locus coeruleus but they are also seen in the basal forebrain, hypothalamic nuclei, and neocortex. (12 Dec 1998) |
