kerat- See: kerato-.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratan sulfate <chemical> A sulfated mucopolysaccharide initially isolated from bovine cornea. at least two types are known. Type I, found mostly in the cornea, contains d-galactose and d-glucosamine-6-o-sulfate as the repeating unit; type II, found in skeletal tissues, contains d-galactose and d-galactosamine-6-o-sulfate as the repeating unit.
Chemical name: Keratosulfate
(12 Dec 1998)
keratan sulphate Heteropolysaccharides which contain an n-acetylated hexosamine in a characteristic repeating disaccharide unit. The repeating structure of each disaccharide involves alternate 1,4- and 1,3-linkages consisting of either n-acetylglucosamine or n-acetylgalactosamine.
(12 Dec 1998)
keratan-sulfate endo-1,4-beta-galactosidase <enzyme> Do not confuse with EC 3.2.1.102 blood-group substance endo-1,4-beta-galactosidase which is also called in enzyme nomenclature endo-beta-galactosidase
Registry number: EC 3.2.1.103
Synonym: keratanase, endo-beta-galactosidase
(26 Jun 1999)
keratectasia Synonym: keratoectasia.
Origin: kerato-+ G. Ektasis, extrusion
(05 Mar 2000)
keratectomy An operation done to change the refraction of the cornea; a crescentic piece of corneal stroma is removed and the resultant corneal wound is sutured. This steepens the cornea and increases its power in that axis.
Origin: kerato-+ G. Ektome, excision
Photorefractive keratectomy, removal of part of the cornea with a laser to change its shape, and thus to modify the refractive error of the eye (reduce its myopia, for example).
(05 Mar 2000)
keratectomy, photorefractive, excimer laser A type of refractive surgery of the cornea to correct myopia and astigmatism, using an excimer laser. An excimer laser is a laser containing a noble gas, such as helium or neon, which is based on a transition between an excited state in which a metastable bond exists between two gas atoms and a rapidly dissociating ground state. The extremely precise laser light reshapes the surface of the cornea without making an incision. This procedure can reduce much higher degrees of myopia than radial keratotomy (keratotomy, radial), although it generally takes longer for vision to clear.
(12 Dec 1998)
keratein The easily digested reduction product of keratin, in which the disulfide links are reduced to SH groups, the individual peptide chains being separated.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratiasis <dermatology> A skin lesion that is abnormally sensitive to the effects of ultraviolet light (sunlight).
Thought to be a precancerous skin lesion that is more common in the fair-skinned or elderly individual. Approximately 20% of these skin lesions will develop into squamous cell carcinoma. Prevention includes the use of sun screen agents and the avoidance of drugs (for example tetracyclines) known to cause photosensitivity reactions. Usually a discreet slightly raised, red or pink lesion located on a sun exposed surface.
Texture may appear as rough, gritty or scaly. Growths may be biopsied to look for cancer or removed via cryotherapy or electrical cautery. Some topical agents may be used to promote peeling.
(27 Sep 1997)
keratic Synonym: horny.
Origin: G. Keras (kerat-), horn
(05 Mar 2000)
keratic precipitates Inflammatory cells on the corneal endothelium.
Synonym: punctate keratitis, keratitis punctata.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratin <protein> A protein that is a primary constituent of hair, nails and skin.
(27 Sep 1997)
keratin filaments A class of intermediate filament's that form a network within epithelial cells and anchor to desmosomes, thus imparting tensile strength to the tissue.
Synonym: cytokeratin filaments.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratin pearl A focus of central keratinization within concentric layers of abnormal squamous cells; seen in squamous cell carcinoma.
Synonym: epithelial nest, epithelial pearl, squamous pearl.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratinases Hydrolases catalyzing the hydrolysis of keratin; each having slightly different specificities.

  • Keratins - »õâ A class of fibrous proteins or scleroproteins that represents the principal constituent of EPIDERMIS; HAIR; NAILS; horny tissues, and the organic matrix of tooth ENAMEL. Two major conformational groups have been characterized, alpha-keratin, whose peptide backbone forms a coiled-coil alpha helical structure consisting of TYPE I KERATIN and a TYPE II KERATIN, and beta-keratin, whose backbone forms a zigzag or pleated sheet structure. alpha-Keratins have been classified into at least 20 subtypes. In addition multiple isoforms of subtypes have been found which may be due to GENE DUPLICATION.
Synonyms : Glycosylated Keratin, Keratin, Keratin, Glycosylated, Keratin-Associated Proteins, alpha-Keratin, Keratin Associated Proteins, alpha Keratin
  • Keratins, Hair-Specific - »õâ Keratins that are specific for hard tissues such as HAIR; NAILS; and the filiform papillae of the TONGUE.
