| HLA |
human leucocyte antigen. HLA molecules identify foreign particles that enter the body, triggering the immune system to attack these invading cells. In Type 1 diabetes this process goes wrong and the HLA selects the body's own beta cells for attack. Genetic research into Type 1 diabetes has principally concentrated on the gene regions for HLA or insulin production.
