A hormone secreted by the placenta during pregnancy that prolongs the life of the corpus luteum, stimulates progesterone production and thus preserves the pregnancy. This hormone accounts for a pregnancy test being positive. It may also be administered therapeutically (PREGNYL/PROFASI) for some infertility problems.
