blood protein electrophoresis Electrophoresis applied to blood proteins.
(12 Dec 1998)
bone Gla protein <protein> Polypeptide of 50 residues formed from a 76-77 amino acid precursor and found in the extracellular matrix of bone. Binds hydroxyapatite. Has limited homology of its leader sequence with that of other Vitamin K dependent proteins such as prothrombin, Factors IX and X and Protein C.
(18 Nov 1997)
bone morphogenetic protein <protein> Activity derived from bone that induces the formation of cartilage and bone in vivo.
Seven bone morphogenetic proteins have been described, BMP 1 being the only one not in the TGF beta superfamily. BMP 3 was formerly called osteogenin.
Acronym: BMP
(18 Nov 1997)
BRCA1 protein Phosphoprotein encoded by the BRCA1 gene (genes, BRCA1). It has limited sequence similarity with known proteins. In normal cells the BRCA1 protein is localised in the nucleus, whereas in the majority of breast cancer cell lines and in malignant pleural effusions from breast cancer patients, it is localised mainly in the cytoplasm. (science 1995;270(5237):713,789-91)
(12 Dec 1998)
byr1 protein kinase <enzyme> Has been sequenced; from schizosaccharomyces pombe; antibody to this enzyme also reacts with s. Cerevisiae protein kinase ste7 and with a map kinase kinase from cos cells
Registry number: EC 2.7.1.-
(26 Jun 1999)
calcium-binding protein <biochemistry> There are two main groups of calcium binding proteins, those that are similar to calmodulin and are called EF hand proteins and those that bind calcium and phospholipid (e.g. Lipocortin) and that have been grouped under the generic name of annexins.
Many other proteins will bind calcium, although the binding site usually has considerable homology with the calcium-binding domains of calmodulin. They can act as transport proteins, regulator proteins or activator proteins.
There is also a vitamin D-dependent variant which is a protein that plays a fundamental role in the vitamin d mediated transport of calcium in reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals. It is found in the intestine, kidneys, egg shell gland, brain, and possibly other organs. Its molecular weight is species dependent.
(12 May 2002)
calcium-calmodulin dependent protein kinase <enzyme> A calmodulin-dependent enzyme that catalyses the phosphorylation of proteins. This enzyme is also sometimes dependent on calcium. A wide range of proteins can act as acceptor, including vimentin, synapsin, glycogen synthase, myosin light chains, and the microtubule-associated proteins.
Registry number: EC 2.7.10.-
(12 Dec 1998)
calcium-dependent protein kinase <enzyme> Mw 51,000; requires ca; not stimulated by calmodulin, phospholipids or diacylglycerol; phosphorylates casein and histones forming primarily phosphoserine and phosphothreonine, respectively
Registry number: EC 2.7.1.-
Synonym: paramecium ca-dependent protein kinase
(26 Jun 1999)
calcium dependent regulator protein <protein> (CDRP) Early name for calmodulin.
(18 Nov 1997)
calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV kinase <enzyme> Phosphorylates and activates cam-kinase iv; from brain
Registry number: EC 2.7.10.-
Synonym: cam-kinase iv kinase
(26 Jun 1999)
cAMP receptor protein catabolite (gene) activator protein
cap binding protein <molecular biology, protein> Protein (24 kD) with affinity for cap structure at 5' end of mRNA that probably assists, together with other initiation factors, in binding the mRNA to the 40S ribosomal subunit. Translation of mRNA in vitro is faster if it has a cap binding protein.
(18 Nov 1997)
p150 protein kinase <enzyme> Mw 150 kD; forms a cellular complex with phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase; a homolog of vps15 protein kinase; amino acid sequence given in first source
Registry number: EC 2.7.1.-
(26 Jun 1999)
p21(ras) farnesyl-protein transferase <enzyme> Transfers the farnesyl moiety from farnesyl pyrophosphate to a cysteine in p21(ras) proteins; composed of an alpha and a beta subunit
Registry number: EC 2.5.1.-
Synonym: farnesyl-protein transferase p21(ras), ras p21 farnesyl-protein transferase, protein-cysteine farnesyltransferase, pc farnesyltransferase, protein farnesyltransferase, p21(ras) farnesyltransferase, farnesyl-protein transferase-alpha, farnesyl-protein transferase-beta, ft alpha, ft beta, caax farnesyltransferase, ftase enzyme
(26 Jun 1999)
P400 protein <protein> Inositol 1,4, 5 triphosphate receptor (InsP3 R). Key protein to understanding mechanisms of InsP3 mediated Ca mobilisation. Originally found as a cerebellar glycoprotein of 250 kD and subsequently shown to be identical to the InsP3 receptor protein.
