the absorbance (A) of a solution is directly proportional to the length of the light path (b) and the concentration (c); the proportionality constant is the molar absorptivity (ε) thus A = εbc. The absorptivity is independent of the concentration and is thus a property of the solute and solvent. Beer's law generally holds only up to a certain concentration, above which the relation between concentration and absorbance becomes nonlinear.
