angiography, digital subtraction A method of delineating blood vessels by subtracting a tissue background image from an image of tissue plus intravascular contrast material that attenuates the X-ray photons. The background image is determined from a digitised image taken a few moments before injection of the contrast material. The resulting angiogram is a high-contrast image of the vessel. This subtraction technique allows extraction of a high-intensity signal from the superimposed background information. The image is thus the result of the differential absorption of X-rays by different tissues.

angioid streaks Tiny breaks in the elastin-filled tissue in the back of the eye (retinae). These abnormalities are visible to the doctor during an examination using a viewing instrument called an ophthalmoscope. Angioid streaks are seen in patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (abbreviated PXE), a rare disorder of degeneration of the elastic fibres with tiny areas of calcification in the skin, back of the eyes (retinae), and blood vessels. Angioid streaks can be associated with blindness.

angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinaemia A lymphoproliferative disorder characterised by generalised lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, fever, sweats, weight loss, skin lesions, and pruritus with hypergammaglobulinaemia; occurs primarily in older adults, often with fatal outcome. Proliferation of B-cells, deficiency of T-cells has been demonstrated.
Synonym: immunoblastic lymphadenopathy.
(05 Mar 2000)
angioinvasive Denoting a neoplasm or other pathologic condition capable of entering the vascular bed.
(05 Mar 2000)
angiokeratoma A discrete, pink to red telangiectasia having a tendency to undergo secondary epithelial changes, including acanthosis and hyperkeratosis. An underlying vascular abnormality is present in many cases. The term angiokeratoma is applied to a number of quite distinct conditions which share a common clinical presentation with asymptomatic hyperkeratotic vascular skin lesions and a histological combination of superficial dermal vascular ectasia.
(12 Dec 1998)

  • Angioplasty, Transluminal, Percutaneous Coronary - »õâ Dilatation of an occluded coronary artery (or arteries) by means of a balloon catheter to restore myocardial blood supply.
Synonyms : Angioplasties, Coronary Balloon, Balloon Angioplasties, Coronary, Balloon Angioplasty, Coronary, Coronary Balloon Angioplasties, Coronary Balloon Angioplasty
  • Angiopoietin-1 - »õâ The first to be discovered member of the angiopoietin family. It may play a role in increasing the sprouting and branching of BLOOD VESSELS. Angiopoietin-1 specifically binds to and stimulates the TIE-2 RECEPTOR. Several isoforms of angiopoietin-1 occur due to ALTERNATIVE SPLICING of its mRNA.
    Synonyms : Angiopoietin 1
  • Angiopoietin-2 - »õâ An angiopoietin that is closely related to ANGIOPOIETIN-1. It binds to the TIE-2 RECEPTOR without receptor stimulation and antagonizes the effect of ANGIOPOIETIN-1. However its antagonistic effect may be limited to cell receptors that occur within the vasculature. Angiopoietin-2 may therefore play a role in down-regulation of BLOOD VESSEL branching and sprouting.
    Synonyms : Angiopoietin 2
  • Angiopoietins - »õâ A family of structurally-related angiogenic proteins of approximately 70 kDa in size. They have high specificity for members of the TIE RECEPTOR FAMILY.
    Synonyms :
  • Angioscopes - »õâ Endoscopes used for viewing the interior of blood vessels.
    Synonyms : Angioscope
