Synonym: ketogenic corticoids test. (05 Mar 2000) |

| 17-ketosteroids | <biochemistry> A steroid based molecule that can be measured in urine. A fraction of cortisol is metabolised to 17-ketosteroids and excreted in the urine. Conditions which result in increased serum cortisol (Cushing's syndrome and Cushing's disease) will result in elevations in 17-ketosteroid levels in the urine. (27 Sep 1997) |

| 17-OH-corticoids test | A test, dependent on the Porter-Silber reaction, that is used as a measure of adrenocortical function and is performed on urine. Low values are seen in Addison's disease and hypopituitarism; high values are seen in Cushing's syndrome and extreme stress. Synonym: 17-OH-corticoids test, Porter-Silber chromogens test. (05 Mar 2000) |
| 17-oxosteroids | <biochemistry> A steroid based molecule that can be measured in urine.
| 17a-hydroxyprogesterone | 17a-Hydroxy-4-pregnen-3,20-dione;medical use is similar to that of progesterone. The acetate is an orally effective derivative, useful in conditions in which parenterally administered progesterone or the caproate is indicated; it possesses some androgenic potency and may cause virilizing changes in a female foetus. The caproate or hexanoate has essentially the same actions and uses as progesterone, but is more potent and has a longer duration of action. A precursor of the androgens and adrenocortical hormones. (05 Mar 2000) |
| 17a-methyltestosterone | <chemical> 17 beta-hydroxy-17-methylandrost-4-en-3-one. Pharmacological action: anabolic steroids, androgens, synthetic, antineoplastic agent, hormonal. Chemical name: Androst-4-en-3-one, 17-hydroxy-17-methyl-, (17beta)- (12 Dec 1998) |
| 17O | Symbol for oxygen-17. (05 Mar 2000) |

| 18-hydroxydesoxycorticosterone | An analog of desoxycorticosterone which is substituted by a hydroxyl group at the c-18 position. (12 Dec 1998) |
| 18O | Symbol for oxygen-18. (05 Mar 2000) |
| 18S rRNA dimethylase | <enzyme> A member of the erm family of dimethylases; 27% identical to ksga protein; from saccharomyces cerevisiae; genbank l26480 Registry number: EC 2.1.1.- Synonym: dim1 protein, dim1 gene product (26 Jun 1999) |
| 19-iodocholesterol | <chemical> 19-iodocholest-5-en-3 beta-ol. A cholesterol derivative usually substituted with radioactive iodine in the 19 position. The compound is an adrenal cortex scanning agent used in the assessment of patients suspected of having cushing's syndrome, hyperaldosteronism, pheochromocytoma and adrenal remnants following total adrenalectomy. Chemical name: Cholest-5-en-3-ol, 19-(iodo-125I)-, (3beta)- (12 Dec 1998) |
| 198Au colloid | A radioactive isotope of gold emitting negative beta particles and gamma radiation, with a half-life of 2.7 days; formerly used for irradiation of closed serous cavities in the palliative treatment of ascites and pleural effusion due to metastatic malignancies, and for liver scans. Synonym: 198Au colloid, colloidal radioactive gold. (05 Mar 2000) |
| 1a,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol | An active form of vitamin D formed in the proximal convoluted tubules of the kidney. A deficiency of the receptor for 1a,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol results in all of the features of a vitamin D3 deficiency. (05 Mar 2000) |

| 11β-hydroxylase deficiency |
an autosomal recessive disorder of steroidogenesis in which deficiency of steroid 11β-monooxygenase causes classic and nonclassic forms of one type of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (type IV). In the classic (hypertensive) form, the enzyme deficiency results in increased levels of cortisol precursors such as 11-deoxycortisol and the salt-retaining hormone 11-deoxycorticosterone, and decreased cortisol and aldosterone synthesis. Clinical manifestations include hypertension and, due to increased androgens, female pseudohermaphroditism and postnatal virilization of both sexes. The nonclassic (late onset) form is milder, and patients are frequently normotensive. See table at hyperplasia.
