17-ketogenic steroid assay test A colourimetric test, based on the Zimmermann reaction, which indicates metabolites or adrenal and testicular steroids excreted as 17-ketones in the urine; increased values are most striking in adrenocortical tumours, decreased values in Addison's disease or in panhypopituitarism.
Synonym: ketogenic corticoids test.
(05 Mar 2000)
17-ketosteroids <biochemistry> A steroid based molecule that can be measured in urine. A fraction of cortisol is metabolised to 17-ketosteroids and excreted in the urine.

Synonym: 17-OH-corticoids test, Porter-Silber chromogens test.
(05 Mar 2000)
17-oxosteroids <biochemistry> A steroid based molecule that can be measured in urine. A fraction of cortisol is metabolised to 17-ketosteroids and excreted in the urine.
Conditions which result in increased serum cortisol (Cushing's syndrome and Cushing's disease) will result in elevations in 17-ketosteroid levels in the urine.
(27 Sep 1997)
17a-hydroxyprogesterone 17a-Hydroxy-4-pregnen-3,20-dione;medical use is similar to that of progesterone. The acetate is an orally effective derivative, useful in conditions in which parenterally administered progesterone or the caproate is indicated; it possesses some androgenic potency and may cause virilizing changes in a female foetus. The caproate or hexanoate has essentially the same actions and uses as progesterone, but is more potent and has a longer duration of action. A precursor of the androgens and adrenocortical hormones.
(05 Mar 2000)

19-iodocholesterol <chemical> 19-iodocholest-5-en-3 beta-ol. A cholesterol derivative usually substituted with radioactive iodine in the 19 position. The compound is an adrenal cortex scanning agent used in the assessment of patients suspected of having cushing's syndrome, hyperaldosteronism, pheochromocytoma and adrenal remnants following total adrenalectomy.
Chemical name: Cholest-5-en-3-ol, 19-(iodo-125I)-, (3beta)-
(12 Dec 1998)
198Au colloid A radioactive isotope of gold emitting negative beta particles and gamma radiation, with a half-life of 2.7 days; formerly used for irradiation of closed serous cavities in the palliative treatment of ascites and pleural effusion due to metastatic malignancies, and for liver scans.
Synonym: 198Au colloid, colloidal radioactive gold.

11β-hydroxylase deficiency an autosomal recessive disorder of steroidogenesis in which deficiency of steroid 11β-monooxygenase causes classic and nonclassic forms of one type of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (type IV). In the classic (hypertensive) form, the enzyme deficiency results in increased levels of cortisol precursors such as 11-deoxycortisol and the salt-retaining hormone 11-deoxycorticosterone, and decreased cortisol and aldosterone synthesis. Clinical manifestations include hypertension and, due to increased androgens, female pseudohermaphroditism and postnatal virilization of both sexes. The nonclassic (late onset) form is milder, and patients are frequently normotensive. See table at hyperplasia.
