tympanic canal A minute canal passing from the inferior surface of the petrous portion of the temporal bone between the jugular fossa and carotid canal to the floor of the tympanic cavity. Located in the wedge of bone separating the jugular canal and carotid canal, it transmits the tympanic branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve.
Synonym: canaliculus tympanicus, Jacobson's canal, tympanic canal.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic canaliculus A minute canal passing from the inferior surface of the petrous portion of the temporal bone between the jugular fossa and carotid canal to the floor of the tympanic cavity. Located in the wedge of bone separating the jugular canal and carotid canal, it transmits the tympanic branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve.
Synonym: canaliculus tympanicus, Jacobson's canal, tympanic canal.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic cavity An air chamber in the temporal bone containing the ossicles; it is lined with mucous membrane and is continuous with the auditory tube anteriorly and the tympanic antrum and mastoid air cells posteriorly.
Synonym: cavitas tympanica, cavity of middle ear, cavum tympani, tympanum.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic cells Numerous groovelike depressions in the walls of the tympanic cavity, communicating with the tubal air cells.
Synonym: cellulae tympanicae, tympanic cells.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic enlargement A swelling, not ganglionic, on the tympanic branch of the glossopharyngeus nerve; it is regarded as possibly similar to the carotid glomus.
Synonym: intumescentia tympanica, tympanic intumescence.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic ganglion A small ganglion on the tympanic nerve during its passage through the petrous portion of the temporal bone.
Synonym: ganglion tympanicum.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic gland One of the mucous gland's in the mucosa of the tympanic cavity.
Synonym: tympanic body.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic groove The sulcus on the inner aspect of the tympanic part of the temporal bone in which the tympanic membrane is fixed.
Synonym: sulcus tympanicus.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic incisure The notch in the superior part of the tympanic ring bridged by the flaccid part of the tympanic membrane.
Synonym: incisura tympanica, incisura rivini, Rivinus' incisure, Rivinus' notch, tympanic incisure.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic intumescence A swelling, not ganglionic, on the tympanic branch of the glossopharyngeus nerve; it is regarded as possibly similar to the carotid glomus.
Synonym: intumescentia tympanica, tympanic intumescence.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic labium of limbus of spiral lamina The lower, long periosteal extension of the limbus laminae spiralis osseae that rests on the basilar lamina of the spiral organ (of Corti).
Synonym: labium limbi tympanicum laminae spiralis, tympanic lip of limbus of spiral lamina.
Labium urethrae, one of the two lateral margins of the external urethral orifice of the female.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic lip of limbus of spiral lamina The lower, long periosteal extension of the limbus laminae spiralis osseae that rests on the basilar lamina of the spiral organ (of Corti).
Synonym: labium limbi tympanicum laminae spiralis, tympanic lip of limbus of spiral lamina.
Labium urethrae, one of the two lateral margins of the external urethral orifice of the female.
(05 Mar 2000)
tympanic membrane <anatomy> The eardrum.
(13 Nov 1997)
tympanic membrane perforation An opening in the tympanic membrane usually caused by trauma. There are four general categories: compression injuries (the most common and usually the result of a blow to the ear); instrumentation injuries (the second most common, usually inadvertent, caused often by cotton swabs or bobby-pins); burn-slag injuries (frequently seen in industry, from hot metal from machines or welding); and blast injuries (usually seen during war or as a result of terrorist bombing). In the absence of infection, most traumatic tympanic membrane perforations heal spontaneously. Persistent perforation is usually a manifestation of tubotympanitis, an inflammation of the eustachian tube and tympanic cavity (middle ear).
(12 Dec 1998)
tympanic nerve <anatomy, nerve> A nerve from the inferior ganglion of the glossopharyngeal nerve, passing through the tympanic canaliculus to the tympanic cavity, forming there the tympanic plexus which supplies the mucous membrane of the tympanic cavity, mastoid cells, and auditory tube; presynaptic parasympathetic fibres also pass through the tympanic nerve via the lesser superficial petrosal nerve to the otic ganglion, where they synapse with postsynaptic fibres that continue to supply the parotid gland.
Synonym: nervus tympanicus, Andersch's nerve, Jacobson's nerve.
