| tryptophan oxygenase | <enzyme> A protohemoprotein. Forms formylkynurenine from l-tryptophan and molecular oxygen. Chemical name: L-Tryptophan:oxygen 2,3-oxidoreductase (decyclizing) Registry number: EC 1.13.11.11 (12 Dec 1998) |
| tryptophan pyrrolase | An oxidoreductase catalyzing the reaction of l-tryptophan and O2 to produce l-N-formylkynurenine; an adaptive enzyme, the level (in the liver) being controlled by adrenal hormones; a step in tryptophan catabolism; also, a step in the synthesis of NAD+ from tryptophan. Synonym: pyrrolase, tryptophan oxygenase, tryptophan pyrrolase, tryptophanase. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tryptophan synthase | <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the conversion of l-serine and 1-(indol-3-yl)glycerol 3-phosphate to l-tryptophan and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. It is a pyridoxal phosphate protein that also catalyses the conversion of serine and indole into tryptophan and water and of indoleglycerol phosphate into indole and glyceraldehyde phosphate. Chemical name: L-Serine hydro-lyase (adding indoleglycerol-phosphate) Registry number: EC 4.2.1.20 (12 Dec 1998) |
| tryptophan synthetase | <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the conversion of l-serine and 1-(indol-3-yl)glycerol 3-phosphate to l-tryptophan and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. It is a pyridoxal phosphate protein that also catalyses the conversion of serine and indole into tryptophan and water and of indoleglycerol phosphate into indole and glyceraldehyde phosphate. Chemical name: L-Serine hydro-lyase (adding indoleglycerol-phosphate) Registry number: EC 4.2.1.20 (12 Dec 1998) |

| tryptophanase | <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the conversion of l-tryptophan and water to indole, pyruvate, and ammonia. It is a pyridoxal-phosphate protein, requiring k+. It also catalyses 2,3-elimination and beta-replacement reactions of some indole-substituted tryptophan analogs of l-cysteine, l-serine, and other 3-substituted amino acids. Chemical name: L-Tryptophan indole-lyase (deaminating) Registry number: EC 4.1.99.1 (12 Dec 1998) |
| tryptophanuria | Enhanced urinary excretion of tryptophan. Tryptophanuria with dwarfism, a syndrome of dwarfism, mental defect, cutaneous photosensitivity, and gait disturbance associated with tryptophanuria; autosomal recessive inheritance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tryst | 1. Trust. 2. An appointment to meet; also, an appointed place or time of meeting; as, to keep tryst; to break tryst. To bide tryst, to wait, at the appointed time, for one with whom a tryst or engagement is made; to keep an engagement or appointment. "The tenderest-hearted maid That ever bided tryst at village stile." (Tennyson) Origin: OE. Trist, tryst, a variant of trust; cf. Icel. Treysta to make trusty, fr. Traust confidence, security. | tryptophan |
an amino acid that occurs in proteins; is essential for growth and normal metabolism; a precursor of niacin, which helps the body produce serotonin, a chemical that acts as a calming agent in the brain and plays a role in sleep. Turkey contains tryptophan, however, the tryptophan in a Thanksgiving turkey has to vie with all the other amino acids that the body is trying to use. So only part of the tryptophan makes it to the brain to help produce serotonin.
