When receiving a video or audio file over the Internet, the file is "streamed" when the video or sound clip actually plays while the files are arriving. The arriving data are stored in a buffer and delayed slightly to ensure the replay can continue without breaks. The opposite method is downloading the whole file to the hard drive and then playing it back.
