Basic principal of geology and archaeology: things on the top are younger than things on the bottom. Changes in soil color and texture are the main clues to natural stratigraphy. When the natural statigraphy is unknown or indistinct, arbitrary units are used to subdivide deposits. Stratigraphy is the key to chronology.
