steroid 11β-monooxygenase [EC 1.14.15.4] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the NADPH-dependent hydroxylation of steroids at the 11 position as a step in the synthesis of steroid hormones. The enzyme is a mitochondrial cytochrome P-450 acting as a terminal oxidase in an electron transport chain that also includes adrenodoxin and a flavoprotein. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, is called 11β-hydroxylase deficiency and causes congenital adrenal hyperplasia (type IV). The enzyme may include the enzyme activities of corticosterone 18-monooxygenase (q.v.). Called also 11β-hydroxylase.

steroid 17α-monooxygenase [EC 1.14.99.9] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the hydroxylation of steroids at the 17 position. The enzyme is a microsomal cytochrome P-450 that accepts electrons from NADPH via a flavoprotein. The reactions catalyzed are steps in the synthesis of steroid hormones, including cortisol, androgens, and estrogens. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, is called 17α-hydroxylase deficiency and causes congenital adrenal hyperplasia (type V). The enzyme also possesses 17α-hydroxyprogesterone aldolase activity. Called also 17α-hydroxylase.

steroid 21-monooxygenase [EC 1.14.99.10] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the NADPH-dependent hydroxylation of steroids at the 21 position. The enzyme is a microsomal cytochrome P-450, requires a flavoprotein for reducing equivalents, and is part of the steroid hormone synthesis system. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, inhibits conversion of 17-hydroxyprogesterone to 11-deoxycortisol; it is called 21-hydroxylase deficiency (q.v.) and causes congenital adrenal hyperplasia (type III). Called also 21-hydroxylase.

steroid d. glucose intolerance or overt hyperglycemia induced by glucocorticoids or estrogens; it is due in part to target tissue insulin resistance and is characterized by a relatively low incidence of microvascular sequelae.
