retina-specific amine oxidase <enzyme> Genbank d88213
Registry number: EC 1.4.-
Synonym: rao enzyme, human
(26 Jun 1999)
Gomori's non-specific acid phosphatase stain <technique> A method in which formalin-fixed frozen sections are incubated in a substrate containing sodium beta-glycerophosphate and lead nitrate at pH 5.0; the insoluble lead phosphate produced is treated with ammonium sulfide to give a black lead sulfide.
(05 Mar 2000)
Gomori's non-specific alkaline phosphatase stain <technique> A calcium-cobalt sulfide method using frozen sections or cold acetone-or formalin-fixed paraffin sections, plus sodium beta-glycerophosphate as a substrate at pH 9.0 to 9.5 with Mg++ as activator; calcium ions precipitate the liberated phosphate, cobalt salt replaces the calcium phosphate, and ammonium sulfide converts the product to a black cobalt sulfide.
(05 Mar 2000)
group-specific protease <enzyme> A serine protease, obtained from rat small intestine, which preferentially inactivates the apo forms of certain pyridoxal phosphate requiring enzymes
Registry number: EC 3.4.21.-

pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein A glycoprotein with the electrophoretic mobility of a beta-1 globulin. It is produced by the placental trophoblast and secreted into the maternal bloodstream during pregnancy. It can be detected 18 days after ovulation and its concentration in plasma rises steadily until, at the end of gestation, it reaches 200 mg/ml. It has been proposed as a measure of placental function for fertility control and is a candidate for an early pregnancy test.
(12 Dec 1998)

Synonym: pro-dpp-carboxypeptidase
(26 Jun 1999)
prostate-specific antigen <tumour marker> A simple blood test used to detect prostate cancer in men. The test measures a specific antigen normally secreted by the prostate. If cancer is developing, the prostate secretes greater amounts of prostate-specific antigen. This test is recommended for men with an enlarged prostate and an increased risk of prostate cancer.
It is an enzyme that is produced by epithelial cells of both benign and malignant prostate tissue. It is an important marker for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
It is a single chain 31 kilodalton glycoprotein with 240 amino acid residues and 4 carbohydrate side chains that is a kallikrein protease.
It is found in normal seminal fluid and produced by the prostatic epithelial cells.
Elevated levels in blood serum are associated with prostatic enlargement and prostatic adenocarcinoma, and this allows early detection of cancer in many cases. In about 70% of cases, the rise is due to a cancerous condition.
No large scale clinical studies have been completed to assess the impact of testing on survival from prostate cancer, and the medical and economic value of testing remain uncertain.
