We define a "rubric" as any text or symbols written on the source manuscript that are not themselves chanted or recited. Delineate rubrics using the tags: <rubric> ... </rubric>. This definition includes many more written features of a manuscript than the original sense of the word, which meant a heading in red letters.

A rubric is a set of criteria used to assess student learning. Rubrics contain areas to be assessed (eg on the English language arts Long composition students are assessed in the areas of topic development and standard English conventions). There are three types of rubrics: checklist, holistic, and analytic.
