ridge elongated "mountain chain", generally (but not always) located in the middle of an ocean. The ridge is an extensive boundary between two plates, where magma coming from the upper mantle differentiated to form new oceanic crust. Thus, additional surface is "accreted" to both plates when the ridge is active.
