a visual cell that serves light and color vision and visual acuity. The synaptic terminal is a broad, flattened pedicle. Outside the fovea the dendritic segments are relatively short and squat with blunt, rounded tips; within the fovea the segments are elongated and narrow and thus resemble rods. There are 6 million to 7 million cones, of which some 10 per cent are concentrated in the fovea, the remainder being fairly uniformly distributed over the rest of the retina. Called also cone, cone cell, and visual c. See also visual cell , under cell, and retinal rod, under rod.
