| compensated respiratory acidosis | Retention of bicarbonate by the renal tubules to minimise the effect on the pH of the blood of retention of carbon dioxide by the lungs, such as occurs with hypoventilation. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| compensated respiratory alkalosis | The increased excretion of acid ions by the kidney to minimise the effect on the pH of the blood of excessive loss of carbon dioxide via the lungs, such as occurs with hyperventilation. (05 Mar 2000) |
| porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome | <syndrome> A syndrome characterised by outbreaks of late term abortions, high numbers of stillbirths and mummified or weak newborn piglets, and respiratory disease in young unweaned and weaned pigs. It is caused by swine infertility and respiratory syndrome virus. (radostits et al., veterinary medicine, 8th ed, p1048) (12 Dec 1998) |
| signs and symptoms, respiratory | Respiratory system manifestations of diseases of the respiratory tract or of other organs. (12 Dec 1998) |
| swine infertility and respiratory syndrome virus | A species of arterivirus causing reproductive and respiratory disease in pigs. The european strain is called lelystad virus. Airborne transmission is common. (12 Dec 1998) |
| diagnostic techniques, respiratory system | Methods and procedures for the diagnosis of diseases of the respiratory tract or its organs. It includes respiratory function tests. (12 Dec 1998) |
| external respiratory nerve of Bell | <anatomy, nerve> Arises from the fifth, sixth, and seventh cervical nerves (roots of brachial plexus), descends the neck behind the brachial plexus, and is distributed to the serratus anterior muscle; it is somewhat unusual in that it courses on the superficial aspect of the muscle is supplies; its paralysis results in "winged scapula". Synonym: nervus thoracicus longus, Bell's respiratory nerve, external respiratory nerve of Bell, posterior thoracic nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| upper respiratory infection | Any number of viral or bacterial infections that includes infections of the throat, nasopharynx, sinuses, larynx, trachea or bronchi. (27 Sep 1997) |
| upper respiratory tract | The nasopharynx, oral cavity, and throat. (09 Oct 1997) |
| Krause's respiratory bundle | A slender, compact fibre bundle extending longitudinally through the dorsolateral region of the medullary tegmentum, surrounded by the nucleus of the solitary tract, below the obex decussating over the central canal, and descending over some distance into the upper cervical segments of the spinal cord. It is composed of primary sensory fibres that enter with the vagus, glossopharyngeal, and facial nerves, and in part convey information from stretch receptors and chemoreceptors in the walls of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and intestinal tracts; in rostral parts of the tract impulses are generated by the receptor cells of the taste buds in the mucosa of the tongue. Its fibres are distributed to the nucleus of the solitary tract. Synonym: tractus solitarius, fasciculus rotundus, fasciculus solitarius, funiculus solitarius, Gierke's respiratory bundle, Krause's respiratory bundle, round fasciculus, solitary bundle, solitary fasciculus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lower respiratory tract | <anatomy> The trachea, bronchi, and lungs. (09 Oct 1997) |
| lower respiratory tract smear | A group of cytologic specimens containing material from the lower respiratory tract and consisting mainly of sputum (spontaneous, induced) and material obtained at bronchoscopy (aspirated, lavaged, brushed); used for cytologic study of cancer and other diseases of the lungs. Synonym: bronchoscopic smear, sputum smear. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acetyl-activating enzyme | A ligase that catalyses the reaction of acetate and CoA and ATP to form AMP, pyrophosphate, and acetyl-CoA. A key step in the activation of acetate. Synonym: acetate thiokinase, acetate-CoA ligase, acetyl-activating enzyme, acetyl-CoA synthetase. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acyl-activating enzyme | <enzyme> Fatty acid thiokinase (long-chain), a ligase forming acyl-CoA, AMP, and pyrophosphate from long-chain fatty acids, ATP, and coenzyme A. Activity is independent of phosphatidylcholine Registry number: EC 6.2.1.3 Synonym: acyl-activating enzyme, dodecanoyl-CoA synthetase, fatty acid thiokinase (long chain), acid-coenzyme a ligase, fatty acid-CoA ligase, acyl-CoA synthetase, acyl-CoA ligase, coash ligase, ciprofibroyl-CoA synthetase, pristanoyl-CoA synthetase, palmityl CoA synthetase, palmitoyl CoA synthetase, palmitoyl CoA ligase, fatty acyl-CoA synthetase, very long chain fatty acid acyl-CoA synthetase, vlcfa acyl-CoA synthetase, nafenopin-CoA ligase, palmitoyl-CoA synthase, faa2 gene product, faa2p protein, vlacs enzyme (26 Jun 1999) |
| adaptive enzyme | Inducible enzyme, an enzyme that can be detected in a growing culture of a microorganism, after the addition of a particular substance (inducer) to the culture medium, but was not detectable prior to the addition and can act on the inducer. A prototype is the beta-galactosidase of Escherichia coli, synthesised upon the addition of various galactosides, whether or not these are good substrates. Compare: constitutive enzyme. Synonym: adaptive enzyme. (05 Mar 2000) |
