pseudocholinesterase <enzyme> An enzyme involved in the breakdown of acetylcholine. Associated with acetylcholinesterase. Acetylcholinesterase is found in nerve tissue while pseudocholinesterase is found primarily in the liver.
Measurement of pseudocholinesterase may be performed as a screening tool prior to the administration of electroconvulsive therapy. It is also useful in identifying organophosphate toxicity or congenital enzyme deficiencies.

pseudocholinesterase deficiency An autosomal dominant disorder manifested by exaggerated responses to drugs ordinarily hydrolyzed by serum pseudocholinesterase (e.g., succinylcholine); believed to entail production of a variant enzyme that is less active than the normal enzyme in hydrolyzing appropriate substrates, but also abnormally resistant to the effects of anticholinesterases.
