| supernumerary kidney | A kidney, in addition to the two usually present, developed from the splitting of the nephrogenic blastema or from a separate metanephric blastema, into which a partial or complete reduplication of the ureteral stalk enters to form a separate, capsulated kidney; in some cases, the separation of the reduplicated organ is incomplete. | diabetic kidney disease | Kidney disease and resultant kidney function impairment due to the long standing effects of diabetes on the microvasculature (glomerulus) of the kidney. Features include increased urine protein and declining kidney function. Severe diabetic nephropathy can lead to kidney failure and end-stage renal disease. (27 Sep 1997) |
| disease, polycystic kidney | Genetic (inherited) disorders characterised by the development of innumerable cysts in the kidneys filled with fluid that replace much of the mass of the kidneys and reduce kidney function leading to kidney failure. (12 Dec 1998) |
| disk kidney | A disk-shaped organ produced by fusion of both poles of the contralateral kidney anlagen. Synonym: disk kidney. (05 Mar 2000) |
| duplex kidney | A kidney in which two pelviocaliceal systems are present. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior pole of kidney | The inferior end of the kidney. Synonym: extremitas inferior renis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior segmental artery of kidney | Origin, anterior branch of renal. See: segmental arteries of kidney. Synonym: arteria segmenti inferioris renis, artery of inferior segment of kidney. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior segment of kidney | Which typically consists of approximately the inferior third of the kidney viewed either anteriorly or posteriorly. Synonym: segmentum inferius. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inguinal ligament of the kidney | The segment of the mesonephros extending to the inguinal region. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interlobar arteries of kidney | The branches of the segmental arteries of the kidney; they run between the renal lobes and give rise to the arcuate arteries. Synonym: arteriae interlobares renis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interlobar veins of kidney | The veins in the kidney that parallel the interlobar arteries, receiving blood from arcuate veins, and terminate in the renal vein. Synonym: venae interlobares renis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interlobular arteries of kidney | The branches of the interlobar arteries of the kidney passing outward through the cortex and supplying the glomeruli. Synonym: arteria interlobulares (renis). (05 Mar 2000) |
| interlobular veins of kidney | They parallel the interlobular arteries and drain the peritubular capillary plexus, emptying into the arcuate veins. Synonym: venae interlobulares renis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| thoracic kidney | Ectopic kidney that partially lies above the diaphragm in the posterior mediastinum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| embryoma of the kidney | <oncology, tumour> Wilm's tumour or nephroblastoma, is a cancerous tumour of the kidney in children. Wilm's is the most common tumour of the kidney and the most common intra-abdominal tumour in children. The exact cause is unknown, but probably develops in foetal tissue due to an underlying genetic factor. Like retinoblastoma, both sporadic and inherited forms occur. Believed to be caused by development of homozygosity for a deletion of the tip of the short arm of chromosome 11, which is presumed to contain a tumour suppressor gene. (07 Oct 1997) Previous: willow wattle, willow-weed, willow-wort, wills, Wilms, Max, wilms tumourNext: Wilms' tumour, Wilson block, Wilson, Clifford, wilson diseaseembryoma of the kidney -->Wilms' tumour A malignant renal tumour of young children, composed of small spindle cells and various other types of tissue, including tubules and, in some cases, structures resembling foetal glomeruli, and striated muscle and cartilage. Often inherited as an autosomal dominant trait . Synonym: adenomyosarcoma, embryoma of the kidney, nephroblastoma. (05 Mar 2000) |
