Synonym: musculus spinalis thoracis, musculus spinalis dorsi, spinal muscle of thorax. (05 Mar 2000) |

| dura mater spinalis | Single-layered strong membrane, comparable to and continuous with (at foramen magnum) the meningeal layer of the intracranial dura mater of the brain. It does not (in contrast to the dura mater of brain) adhere to the enveloping bony structures (vertebrae) or their periosteum, being separated from the latter by a considerable space, the vertebral epidural space-a true space containing the internal vertebral venous plexus embedded in a matrix of epidural fat. Synonym: dura mater spinalis, endorrhachis, theca vertebralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tabes spinalis | See Tabes dorsalis. (12 Dec 1998) |
| filum durae matris spinalis | The thread-like termination of the spinal dura mater, surrounding and fused to the filum terminale of the cord, and attached to the deep dorsal sacrococcygeal ligament; extends from S2-3 to Co2 vertebral levels. Synonym: filum durae matris spinalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fissura mediana anterior medullae spinalis | A deep median fissure on the anterior surface of the spinal cord. Synonym: fissura mediana anterior medullae spinalis, anteromedian groove, sulcus ventralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lemniscus spinalis | A large ascending fibre bundle in the ventral half of the lateral funiculus of the spinal cord, arising from cells in the posterior horn at all levels of the cord, which cross within their segments of origin in the white commissure. In their contralateral ascent, the bundle is intermingled with numerous intersegmental fibres. The spinothalamic tract continues from the spinal cord into the brainstem, occupying a ventrolateral position and issuing numerous fibres to the rhombencephalic and mesencephalic reticular formation, to the lateral part of the central gray substance of the mesencephalon, and to the deep and intermediate layers of the superior colliculus; the relatively few fibres (10 to 20%) that remain form the true spinothalamic tract which enters the diencephalon and ends in the nucleus ventralis posterior (caudal part) and intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus. In its ascent in the spinal cord the tract is composed of a dorsal part, the lateral spinothalamic tract, which conveys impulses associated with pain and temperature sensation, and a more ventral part, the anterior spinsothalamic tract, involved in tactile sensation. Synonym: lemniscus spinalis, spinal lemniscus, tractus spinothalamicus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| funiculi medullae spinalis | Any of the columns of the spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| area nervi facialis | <anatomy, nerve> The area in the fundus of the internal acoustic meatus superior to the transverse crest through which the facial nerve passes to enter the facial canal. Synonym: area nervi facialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria comes nervi phrenici | <anatomy, artery> Origin, internal thoracic; distribution, pericardium, diaphragm, and pleura; anastomoses, musculophrenic, inferior phrenic, mediastinal and pericardial branches of the internal thoracic. Synonym: arteria pericardiacophrenica, arteria comes nervi phrenici. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria comitans nervi ischiadici | <anatomy, nerve> Origin, inferior gluteal; distribution, sciatic nerve; anastomoses, branches of profunda femoris. Synonym: arteria comitans nervi ischiadici, companion artery to sciatic nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria comitans nervi mediani | <anatomy, artery> Origin, anterior interosseous; distribution, accompanies median nerve to palm; anastomoses, branches of superficial palmar arch. Synonym: arteria comitans nervi mediani, arteria mediana. (05 Mar 2000) |
| canalis nervi facialis | The bony passage in the temporal bone through which the facial nerve passes; the facial canal commences at the internal auditory meatus with the horizontal part which passes at first anteriorly (medial crus of facial canal) then turns posteriorly at the geniculum of the facial canal to pass medial to the tympanic cavity (lateral crus of facial canal); finally, it turns downward (descending part of facial canal) to reach the stylomastoid foramen. Synonym: canalis nervi facialis, aqueductus fallopii, fallopian aqueduct, fallopian canal. (05 Mar 2000) |
| canalis nervi petrosi superficialis minoris | <anatomy, nerve> The small opening in the petrous bone lateral to the hiatus of facial canal that gives passage to the lesser petrosal nerve. Synonym: hiatus canalis nervi petrosi minoris, Arnold's canal, canalis nervi petrosi superficialis minoris. (05 Mar 2000) |
