| non-specific system | <physiology> A physiological term denoting that part of the brainstem reticular formation that plays a central role in the organism's bodily and behavorial alertness. It extends as a diffusely organised neural apparatus through the central region of the brainstem into the subthalamus and the intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus; by its ascending connections it affects the function of the cerebral cortex in the sense of behavioural responsiveness; its descending (reticulospinal) connections transmit its activating influence upon bodily posture and reflex mechanisms (e.g., muscle tonus), in part by way of the gamma motor neurons. See: reticular formation. Synonym: non-specific system. (05 Mar 2000) |

| non-specific therapy | The injection of a foreign protein, typhoid vaccine, etc., to induce fever in the treatment of certain diseases, especially those of a parasyphilitic nature. Synonym: phlogotherapy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| non-specific urethritis | Urethritis not resulting from gonococcal, chlamydial, or other specific infectious agents. Synonym: simple urethritis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| non-specific vaginitis | bacterial vaginosis |
| non-stereospecific dipeptidase | <enzyme> Hydrolyzes d- or l-amino acid peptides from the brain of cephalopods Registry number: EC 3.4.13.17 Synonym: peptidyl-d-amino acid hydrolase (26 Jun 1999) |
| non-steroidal anti-inflammatory | <pharmacology> A large group of anti-inflammatory agents that work by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins. They exert anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic actions. Examples include: ibuprofen, ketoprofen, piroxicam, naproxen, sulindac, aspirin, choline subsalicylate, diflunisal, fenoprofen, indomethacin, meclofenamate, salsalate, tolmetin and magnesium salicylate. A contrast is made with steroidal compounds (such as hydrocortisone or prednisone) exerting anti-inflammatory activity. Acronym: NSAID (05 May 2002) |
| non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug | <pharmacology> A large group of anti-inflammatory agents that work by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins. Acronym: NSAID (05 May 2002) |
| non-steroidal oestrogens | <pharmacology> Non-steroidal compounds with oestrogenic activity. (12 Dec 1998) |
| sugar-non-specific nuclease | <enzyme> An exocytoplasmic sugar-non-specific nuclease that is able to degrade linear or covalently closed circular double-stranded DNA as well as single-stranded DNA or RNA; from cyanobacterium anabaena; mw 29 kD; amino acid sequence has been determined Registry number: EC 3.1.- Synonym: nuca gene product, anabaena (26 Jun 1999) |
| diabetes mellitus, non-insulin-dependent | Diabetes characterised by the ability to survive without ketoacidosis in the absence of insulin therapy. It is usually of slow onset and patients exhibit a tendency to obesity. (12 Dec 1998) |
| drugs, non-prescription | Drugs that can be sold legally without a prescription. (12 Dec 1998) |
| lymphoma, non-hodgkin | Any of a group of malignant tumours of lymphoid tissue that differ from hodgkin disease, being more heterogeneous with respect to malignant cell lineage, clinical course, prognosis, and therapy. The only common feature among these tumours is the absence of giant reed-sternberg cells, a characteristic of hodgkin's disease. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Abbe test plate | <equipment> A long, wedge-shaped coverslip about 0.20 mm thick at one end and 0.10 to 0.12 mm at the other end coated chemically with a silver film on which are ruled horizontal lines. at each variation in thickness of 0.01 mm there are vertical lines. By means of oblique illumination and by focusing on different portions of the plate, it is possible to determine the optimum coverslip thickness for any objective and also, for microscopes with drawtubes, the tube length for best objective performance. The approximate freedom from spherical and chromatic aberrations can also be estimated. Small isolated bits of silver near the edges of the lines form good objects for the star test (05 Aug 1998) |
| acetone test | A test for ketonuria; the suspected urine is shaken up with a few drops of sodium nitroprusside, and strong ammonia water is then gently poured over the mixture; if acetone is present, a magenta ring forms at the line of contact; tablets containing sodium nitroprusside and alkali are now more commonly used. (05 Mar 2000) |
| achievement test | A standardised test used to measure acquired learning, e.g., competence in a specific subject area such as reading or arithmetic, in contrast to an intelligence test which is a useful index of potential ability or learning. (05 Mar 2000) |
