a chronic vasculitis of the lower legs, usually seen in young or middle-aged women, with an unknown etiology; characteristics include painful, reddish blue nodular lesions that may ulcerate, leaving scars, or resorb, leaving atrophic depressions. In the late stages, the subcutaneous fat is replaced by fibrosis and atrophy. See also erythema induratum.
