that due to allergic reactions caused by hypersensitivity to various agents, particularly sulfonamides, penicillins, and methyldopa. It is characterized by interstitial infiltration, principally perivascular, by lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages, and eosinophils.

a respiratory hypersensitivity reaction to repeated inhalation of organic particles, usually in an occupational setting, with onset a few hours after exposure to the allergen. Characteristics include fever, fatigue, chills, unproductive cough, tachycardia, and tachypnea; in the chronic form there is interstitial fibrosis with collagenous thickening of the alveolar septa. There are many specific types (see table). Called also allergic or extrinsic allergic alveolitis.

a group of systemic necrotizing vasculitides thought to represent hypersensitivity to an antigenic stimulus, such as a drug, infectious agent, or exogenous or endogenous protein; all disorders in this group involve the small vessels. Types include varieties of Henoch-Schönlein purpura and serum sickness, as well as urticarial v. Called also allergic or leukocytoclastic v. and hypersensitivity or leukocytoclastic angiitis.
