hydroxyacylglutathione hydrolase [EC 3.1.2.6] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the cleavage of a hydroxyacylglutathione compound to the corresponding hydroxy acid and glutathione, specifically converting lactoylglutathione to lactic acid as the last step in the conversion of methylglyoxal to lactic acid. The enzyme is found in red cells and other animal tissues. See also glyoxalase.
