Graves' disease An autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland that results in the overproduction of thyroid hormone. This causes such symptoms as nervousness, heat intolerance, heart palpitations, and unexplained weight loss.

gravel A disease characterized by small stones which are formed in the kidneys, passed along the ureters to the bladder, and expelled with the urine. Synonym: kidney stone.

Graves' d. a syndrome of diffuse hyperplasia of the thyroid, with a female predominance; it usually has an autoimmune etiology and has been linked to autoimmune thyroiditis. Characteristics include hyperthyroidism (q.v.), usually with goiter and ophthalmic symptoms (Graves' orbitopathy). Most patients have circulating thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins that cause excessive secretion of thyroid hormones by binding to TSH receptors on thyroid cells. Called also Basedow's, Flajani's,Parry's d, and diffuse toxic goiter.
