flash point The temperature at which a pool of liquid will generate sufficient vapours to form an ignitable vapour/air mixture. The temperature at which a liquid will produce its lower explosive limit in air. Flash point describes one of several specific laboratory tests. Frequently materials can be made to burn below their flash point if increased surface area or mechanical activity raise the concentration of vapour in air above the lower explosive limit.

flashback A spontaneous recurrence of a specific experience which originally occurred whilst taking a drug, usually LSD. Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) FAS is classified as an alcoholrelated birth defect. Women who drink heavily during pregnancy may be at risk of producing babies with FAS. The main features of FAS are: growth retardation, intellectual impairment, neurological abnormalities, behavioural problems, characteristic facial feaures (flattened midface, a small jaw, and a thin upper lip).
