Physical and mental birth defects caused by a baby's mother drinking large amounts of alcohol (often defined as more than five or six drinks a day) during pregnancy. Women who drink somewhat less during pregnancy may have babies who suffer from a less severe version of the syndrome, called fetal alcohol effect.
