endometriosis interna <gynaecology> A condition where there is abnormal thickening of the endometrial lining of the uterus, extending into the fibrous and muscular layers. This condition occurs most commonly in women above 30 who have had children.
Symptoms include prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding and painful menses with cramping. Treatment generally includes pain medications and a hysterectomy in select (more severe) cases. Birth control pills may aggravate symptoms.
(07 Apr 1998)
tunica interna bulbi Light sensitive layer of the eye. In vertebrates, looking from outside, there are four major cell layers: (i) the outer neural retina, which contains neurons (ganglion cells, amacrine cells, bipolar cells) as well as blood vessels, (ii) the photoreceptor layer, a single layer of rods and cones, (iii) the pigmented retinal epithelium (PRE or RPE), (iv) the choroid, composed of connective tissue, fibroblasts and including a well vascularised layer, the chorio capillaris, underlying the basal lamina of the PRE. Behind the choroid is the sclera, a thick organ capsule.
In molluscs (especially cephalopods such as the squid) the retina has the light sensitive cells as the outer layer with the neural and supporting tissues below.
See: retinal rods, retinal cones, rhodopsin.
(18 Nov 1997)
tunica interna thecae folliculi <embryology> The inner cellular and vascular layer of the vesicular ovarian follicle.
There is evidence that the epithelioid cells produce oestrogen and contribute to the formation of the corpus luteum after ovulation.
Synonym: theca interna.
(05 Mar 2000)
fascia spermatica interna The inner covering of the spermatic cord, continuous above the deep inguinal ring with fascia transversalis.
Synonym: fascia spermatica interna, infundibuliform fascia, tunica vaginalis communis.
(05 Mar 2000)
lamina interna cranii The inner compact layer of the cranial bones.
Synonym: lamina interna cranii.
(05 Mar 2000)
fovea inguinalis interna A depression on the peritoneal surface of the anterior abdominal wall between the ridges formed by the inferior epigastric artery and the medial umbilical ligament; it corresponds to the position of the superficial inguinal ring and is the site of a direct inguinal hernia.
Synonym: fossa inguinalis medialis, fovea inguinalis interna.
(05 Mar 2000)
ala major ossis sphenoidalis Strong squamous processes extending in a broad superolateral curve from the body of the sphenoid bone. The greater wing presents these suraces (facies): 1) cerebral surface: forms anterior third of the floor of the lateral portions of the middle cranial fossa; 2) temporal surface: forms the deepest portion of the temporal fossa; 3) infratemporal surface, forms the "roof" of the infratemporal fossa; 4) orbital surface: forms posterolateral wall of orbit. The greater wing forms the inferior border of the supraorbital fissure, and is perforated at its root by foramina rotundum ovale, and spinosum and the pterygoid canal.
Synonym: ala major ossis sphenoidalis, ala temporalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
ala minor ossis sphenoidalis One of a bilateral pair of triangular, pointed plates extending laterally from the anterolateral body of the sphenoid bone. Forming the posteriormost portion of the floor of the anterior cranial fossa, their sharp posterior edge forms the sphenoidal ridge separating anterior and middle cranial fossae. The medial end of the lesser wing attaches to the body by means of two pedicles, thus forming the optic canal. The wing itself forms the superior margin of the supraorbital fissure.
Synonym: ala minor ossis sphenoidalis, ala orbitalis, Ingrassia's apophysis, Ingrassia's wing.
(05 Mar 2000)
ala ossis ilii The upper flaring portion of the ilium.
Synonym: ala ossis ilii.
(05 Mar 2000)
apex ossis sacri The tapering lower end of the sacrum that articulates with the coccyx.
Synonym: apex ossis sacri.
(05 Mar 2000)
apex partis petrosae ossis temporalis The irregular antero-medial extremity of the petrous part on which the anterior end of the carotid canal opens.
Synonym: apex partis petrosae ossis temporalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
articulatio ossis pisiformis The synovial joint between the pisiform and triquetrum; it is separate from the other intercarpal joints.
Synonym: articulatio ossis pisiformis, articulation of pisiform bone.
(05 Mar 2000)
basis ossis metacarpalis The expanded proximal extremity of each metacarpal that articulates with one or more of the distal row of carpal bones.
Synonym: basis ossis metacarpalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
basis ossis metatarsalis The expanded proximal extremity of each metatarsal bone; it articulates with one or more of the distal row of tarsal bones.
Synonym: basis ossis metatarsalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
basis ossis sacri The upper end of the sacrum that articulates with the body of the fifth lumbar vertebra in the midline and the alae on either side.
Synonym: basis ossis sacri.
