traditionally, a group of relatives by blood, marriage, or adoption, living in close proximity or together, especially if three generations are involved. In queer contexts, the term loosely designates a chosen family with many members of various ages (including children) living close to one another (eg "The lesbian couple and their gay friends in Queer as Folk became a big extended family when Gus was born").
