| colony-stimulating f.’s |
a group of glycoprotein lymphokine growth factors produced by blood monocytes, tissue macrophages, and stimulated lymphocytes; they are required for differentiation of stem cells into granulocyte and monocyte cell colonies, and were originally named according to their ability to stimulate the production of morphologically distinguishable myeloid cell colonies in vitro. In vivo, they stimulate the production of granulocytes and macrophages and enhance the actions of mature cells. Colony-stimulating factors can be produced by recombinant DNA techniques and have been used experimentally as anticancer agents and for the restoration of hematopoietic function after myelosuppression in transplantation and cancer chemotherapy.
