a type of arteriosclerosis in which the vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart become clogged with plaque, a fatty substance, and calcium, depriving the heart muscle of the oxygen it needs for normal functioning

| atherectomy |
A procedure whereby a specially designed catheter shaves off or cuts away cholesterol deposits from a diseased coronary artery. This is the only procedure that literally removes cholesterol from a diseased blood vessel.

| atherosclerosis |
Lipid (fat) deposits, causing narrowing of the arteries and resulting in coronary artery disease. It occurs to some degree with aging, but other risk factors that accelerate this process have been identified - high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and family history for atherosclerotic disease.
